WHAT TO STAY AWAY FROM WHEN PURCHASING SKIN CARE PRODUCTS

What products we use on our bodies is extremely important, especially our face. There are a few ingredients that show up in things that we put on our face, hair and body, that can actually be pretty dangerous. More natural products are definitely the way to go.

But just so you know what you should be looking out for, here are some of the ingredients that have been found to be damaging.

SODIUM SULFATE

This has been found in many things like shampoo, foundation, facial cleanser, and more. This has been known to cause things such as irritation, sores, and eye damage. It has also been said to have caused acne, especially on the chin and around the mouth.

BHA

This is mainly in exfoliation cleansers. Researchers have found that it can actually lead to the loss of pigmentation, and in studies on animals, it has been found to cause liver damage and stomach cancer.

PARABENS

These can be found in many different products including moisturizer. Research has shown that parabens are connected to breast cancer, skin cancer, and even a loss of sperm. Parabens have also been shown to cause problems with the endocrine and reproductive systems. Although these are all very serious things, parabens have not been labeled as dangerous. However, you should still search for products that say they’re paraben free.

RETINOL

This can also be found in moisturizers, along with sunscreen and most anti-aging products. While it’s not really harmful, the effects may be altered when in the sun, so be sure to use products have include this during the night. Stay away from sunscreens that include retinol, retinoic acid, retinyl acetate, and retinyl palmitate.

FRAGRANCE

This one may be a little more obvious. This is also found in moisturizers and face topical. Businesses aren’t required to add this on the label of ingredients, but it’s pretty easy to tell. Fragrances may have chemicals that mess with hormones and may be an issue for people with allergies. You should try to buy fragrance free whenever you buy any kind of skin care product.

Although it may be a little bit extra work when purchasing skin care products, it is definitely helpful to read through the ingredients. Keep these in mind when buying products and maybe even take a step further and continuing research for yourself. There could be many possible harmful ingredients in your products that you don’t even know about.
